Program Information

Class Placement

 The DYC sailing instructors will determine appropriate placement of your child.

Refund policy

A FULL REFUND will be given if two weeks or more notice is provided to the Fleet Captains via email prior to the com-mencement of the session.

A 50% REFUND will be given for any stu-dent who begins the first day of class but subsequently decides not to continue the session. The fleet captains must be con-tacted via email at the end of the first day should a student decide not to continue in order for a refund to be issued.

NO REFUND will be granted after the first full day of class has concluded and no no-tice has been made to the fleet captains that a student would like to withdraw. No re-funds will be issued for any no-shows. Stu-dents who miss a scheduled class will not be able to make up the missed class.

Property Loss & Damage Policy

The Club is not responsible for loss or damage to personal property of students.

Any loss or damage to Club equipment, other than normal wear, shall be the re-sponsibility of the sailor and his or her parents and will be billed directly to their account and should be reported to the fleet captains. Both skipper and crew(s) share the responsibility for a boat sailed equally.

 Storage of privately owned Optimists and 420’s for the duration of the race team sea-son is offered free of charge. All privately owned boats must be removed from the DYC property prior to Labor Day.

Sailor Code of Conduct

In order to run a safe and productive pro-gram we need to have a discipline policy. Our discipline policy maintains that each participant will have three chances to cor-rect any disciplinary problems that arise.

1. First incident, the instructor will call your parent and the transgression will be reported to the fleet captains. This will be documented and the fleet captains will be notified.

2.  Second incident you and your parents will be asked to meet with the instruc-tor and the fleet captains to discuss the first and second transgression and to make a plan to avoid any future misbe-havior. This meeting will also be docu-mented and formally communicated to the Commodore.

3. Third incidents and any major incidents and you’re out! We will notify your par-ents that the sailor has been dismissed from the program. There will be no re-fund. All program dismissals will be documented and formally communicat-ed to the DYC board members.

Causes for disciplinary action may include, but are not limited to:

  • Inappropriate language or immature behavior;
  • Continued and willful disobedience;
  • Open defiance of the authority of any instructor;
  • Conduct of such character as to consti-tute a danger to the physical well being of other participants;
  • Physical or verbal assault upon another participant or upon any instructor or other club employee;
  • Taking, or attempting to take, personal property or money from another partici-pant or from his presence;
  • Willfully causing, or attempting to cause any minor damage to club property; major damage constitutes immediate dismissal.

Safety & Attire

The Dennis Yacht Club Sailing Program is dedicated to insuring the safety of our stu-dents during their participation in sailing classes. When exercising general supervi-sion, our instructors are immediately ac-cessible to participants. They are constantly alert for potentially hazardous conditions and are able to react accordingly. If an in-structor has to divert attention from the overall supervision of a class, to make a res-cue, administer first aid, or to repair a boat another instructor will watch the class.

Activity Selection

Instructors take care in selecting the ap-propriate activity for a class on a given day. In addition to taking into account the level of skill and ability, size and age of the stu-dents, they consider criteria such as weath-er and other potential hazards when decid-ing how to conduct a class.

The weather directly affects the safety of the sailor. Instructors understand the weather and local environmental conditions. We monitor a weather radio and receive pe-riodic reports through the Internet. Once bad weather is predicted, the staff acts con-servatively and plans alternate activities to keep a class onshore.

LIFE JACKETS

Personal flotation devices (PFD, lifejack-ets) must be worn at all times when on the water for sailing lessons. These must be U.S. Coast Guard approved and must be properly rated to an individual’s size and weight. Lifejackets must be worn by stu-dents and staff when participating in any activity that takes a person into a boat or onto the dock. The lifejacket needs to be properly identified with the owner’s name and should be inspected regularly to en-sure that it is in good functioning condition (no missing straps, torn zippers, exposed or waterlogged flotation). If a lifejacket is unsafe or of questionable value, it will not allowed for use by a sailor.

WHISTLES

 A whistle on a lanyard (string) must also be attached to the sailor’s lifejacket.

 FOOTWEAR AND APPROPRIATE ATTIRE

 Shoes that cover the toes and encircle the feet (no sandals) must be worn at all times when on the water. Appropriate sailing at-tire is also required. In the summer months on hot sunny days, hats, sunglasses, sun block, bathing suits, shorts and t-shirts are needed. On cooler, rainy days, appropri-ate foul weather gear is required includ-ing a waterproof jacket (spray jacket), waterproof pants (spray pants) or a wetsuit (shorty) to keep comfortable on the water. Sailors who are not dressed appropriately for the weather may not be permitted to sail.

 Non-Member Sailing Participation

 Non DYC members are welcome and en-couraged to participate in the DYC sailing program. Time spent on the property how-ever is only permitted to those non-mem-ber students enrolled in a scheduled sail-ing lesson or participating in an organized sailing event. Extended family, friends and pets are not permitted at any time. Parents are allowed on the property for pick up and drop off of sailors and for certain other sail-ing events as permitted by the Club.

 PARKING

Due to the limitations on parking at the Club, parking by non-members is not per-mitted except for pick up and drop off of sailors and is limited to no more than 15 minutes. In rare exceptions a temporary parking permit may be issued by the club manager or fleet captains with permission of the commodore for a non-member to park at the Club for a longer period of time. Non-members who choose to ride a bike or scooter to the Club are permitted to keep their bike or scooter on the DYC property during scheduled lessons and/or organized sailing events.
